Debora Foguel

Holds a degree in Biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1987), a master's degree in Biochemistry from the Institute of Chemistry - UFRJ (1991) and a PhD in Biochemistry from the Institute of Chemistry - UFRJ (1993). He completed his sandwich doctorate at the University of Illinois under the supervision of Dr. Gregorio Weber and Anthony Crofts (1991-1992). She is currently a full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Leopoldo de Meis Institute of Medical Biochemistry. She has experience in the area of Biochemistry, with an emphasis on Chemistry of Macromolecules (proteins), working mainly on the following topics: protein aggregation, protein folding, amyloidogenic diseases, inflammation and functional amyloids. She is currently a 1A researcher at CNPq and Scientist of Our State (Faperj), Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, of the Academy of the Developing World (TWAS). In 2018 she was awarded the Grand Cross Order of Scientific Merit. In the period between 2011-2015 she was Pro Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research at UFRJ. In 2016, she received the Nise da Silveira Prize for Women in Science from the City of Rio de Janeiro and in 2019 the Mietta Santiago Prize from the Chamber of Deputies, also offered to women scientists. She is currently Education Coordinator of the National Science for Education Network (Rede CpE). She is a researcher at the Society, Science and University Study Center (SoU Ciência).
