Digital Literacies and Digital Inclusion in Contemporary Brazil

Welcome to the Digital Literacies and Digital Inclusion in Contemporary Brazil Workshop

This workshop is co-sponsored by the British Council’s Newton Fund and the The São Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP.

Researcher Links workshops have three overarching objectives:

• Support international development-relevant research geared towards economic development and welfare;

• Contribute to capacity building of early career researchers either within each country, or cross-nationally;

• Establish new research links or significantly develop existing links, with the potential for longer term sustainability.

We are bringing together early career researchers based in Brazil and the UK working at the intersection of emerging digital literacies and social inclusion with particular attention to the use of creative and cross-disciplinary methodologies to explore these urgent issues. Participants will be invited to discuss their work together with both established researchers in the field and representatives of Brazilian NGOs working on digital inclusion initiatives in Brazil.

We have prepared a short but intensive set of activities that will allow for the participants to share their research and views on the subject and to network among themselves and with four senior researchers that will act as their mentors and Brazilian specialists from the Third Sector who will contribute with a state of the art of digital inclusion and digital literacies in Brazil. We wish, above all, to create a seedbed for future collaborations among all participants.

In order to level out the field and provide some food for thought, we prepared a briefing report that we suggest everybody read prior to the discussions. All participants have sent short papers accompanied by video presentations that will give everyone else an idea of their research interests and provide context to discussions on cross-disciplinary methodologies and future collaborations. Everyone is encouraged to comment on everybody else’s papers prior to the first discussion session.
The mentors have kindly prepared individual video keynotes that can be found on their participant areas. Everybody will have an opportunity to interact with the mentors about the keynotes on the first session of Wednesday, 14th.  On Thursday, 15th July, everybody will meet again with the mentors, this time in four smaller groups, to exchange ideas about their research and possible practical outcomes from the workshop.
All synchronous activities will take place on Google Meet rooms. Links to the rooms are provided in the workshop schedule page.
