Advancing Qualitative Research Toward Transformative Impact

Traditional qualitative research has deepened our understanding of human experiences and social meanings. Yet, one question remains: how does such understanding lead to transformation? Today’s pressing issues—social injustice, cultural marginalization, and environmental degradation—demand research that not only interprets the world but helps change it.

This presentation views qualitative inquiry as a catalyst for meaningful transformation—one that empowers participants, challenges inequities, and produces insights for justice and sustainability. Grounded in transformative, participatory, and decolonizing paradigms, it highlights the researcher’s ethical role to engage reflexively and collaboratively in creating knowledge that matters.

The discussion explores how qualitative research can move beyond description to action—co-creating knowledge with communities, fostering critical reflection, and influencing policy and practice. It invites researchers to reframe their positionality, design studies that promote equity, and contribute to sustainable change.

Reimagining qualitative research for transformative impact also requires changes in academic culture. Funding bodies and review boards must support emergent, co-created methodologies. Journals should value narrative and participatory outputs. Graduate programs must nurture reflexivity, humility, and ethical courage. Finally, policymakers and practitioners can draw on transformative qualitative insights to design inclusive interventions and challenge unjust systems.
