XVII INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING - SIGM

The International Symposium on Genetics and Plant Breeding (SIGM) is a consolidated extension activity with a 16-year history as a benchmark scientific event in the field of agricultural sciences. Annually organized by the Graduate Program in Genetics and Plant Breeding and the Study Group on Genetics and Plant Breeding (GenMelhor) at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), the symposium promotes the seamless integration of teaching, research, and extension.

Since its inception, SIGM has established itself as a premier stage for technical-scientific discussion in the sector. Over its 16 editions, the event has achieved expressive milestones within the scientific community, recording a historical total of more than 4,000 participants, including speakers and attendees. Furthermore, the symposium’s excellence and scope are reflected in the hosting of 40 lectures delivered by international specialists, 50 applied short courses, 200 technical update lectures,

500 poster presentations, and 140 oral presentations with debates that highlight the scientific production of undergraduate and graduate students.

The XVII SIGM, scheduled to take place from August 12 to 14, 2026, on the campus of the Federal University of Viçosa, holds an exceptional character as it coincides with two monumental celebrations: the Centenary of the Federal University of Viçosa, celebrating 100 years of excellence in agricultural education and science, and the Golden Jubilee of the Graduate Program in Genetics and Plant Breeding, commemorating 50 years of pioneering research and the training of market leaders.

Under the theme "50 YEARS GENETICS AND BREEDING UFV", the event will explore the scientific, technological, and innovative evolution of the field. By recognizing the achievements of multiple generations of professionals, the symposium highlights the essential role of plant breeding in advancing agricultural sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and the mitigation of socioeconomic inequalities and regional asymmetries.

The central objective of this seventeenth edition is to discuss the historical, scientific, technological, and innovative evolution of Genetics and Plant Breeding, showcasing how different generations of professors, researchers, extension workers, and professionals have provided decisive contributions to education, precision agriculture, biodiversity prospecting, and sustainability.
