Our History
The Railway Engineering Symposium was born in 2017 from the initiative of professors from UNICAMP, UFES, Poli-USP, and IFSP who had their research subsidized by Vale's Cátedra program. It started as a small event for about 80 people in one of FUNCAMP's auditoriums.
The success of the event, both in academia and among the engineering teams of railway industry companies, led to continuous growth in 2018 and 2019. For 2020, there was planning for a two-day symposium because the volume of papers was significant. Unfortunately, the pandemic (Covid-19) forced a change of plans, and the organizing committee opted to offer a series of three webinars with important foreign researchers instead of a face-to-face event. Recordings of these webinars are available on YouTube.
In 2021, in its fourth edition, the Railway Engineering Symposium was organized by UNICAMP, UFES, IFSP, Poli-USP, UNISANTA, UFJF, and IME. There were more than 500 registrations, and the event was broadcast live over two days, featuring speakers from the government, industry, and academia, including three international guests. Three of Brazil's largest freight concessionaires (Vale, RUMO, and MRS) sponsored the event, alongside important manufacturers of railway components and systems (Greenbrier Maxion, Amsted Rail). In 2022, already established as an important date in the annual calendar for the railway sector, the Railway Engineering Symposium reached its fifth edition, even bigger! In addition to the live keynote talks, technical papers were submitted by the railway industry, and the first indexed compendium of works was created, with an ISBN and each paper with its own DOI.
In 2023, the Symposium returns, and once again, it will be face-to-face at the Eldorado Institute in Campinas-SP. In addition to maintaining all the advancements we have already made, this time we will have the partnership of the IHHA - International Heavy Haul Association, which will promote a kick-off for its internationally recognized conference, to be held in Rio in August 2023 (https://ihhario2023.com/). We will hold a two-day event, with presentations related to Wheel-Rail Interaction, Rolling Stock, Track Infrastructure, and Logistics. The selected papers will be included in the Proceedings of the VI Symposium, and some of them will be eligible for presentation at the IHHA.
We are confident that your presence will enhance this edition even more. Welcome!
