Fires of a size unmatched in the modern era have occurred more and more frequently in recent years. The year 2020 exemplified this trend, with more than 4 Mha and 2.5 Mha of areas affected by fire in the Pantanal and the western United States, for example. However, detection, monitoring, and the use of this information to support planning actions for both combat and mitigation actions still face major challenges. In this thematic section, the objective is to present current products based on remote sensing generated at regional, national, and global scales. We intend to discuss the methodological advances and the challenges both for their technical and operational development as well as for the translation of information to society and the engagement of decision makers.
