Prof. Dr. Ina Maja Vorberg, a group leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn, focuses her research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying prion formation and propagation. Her work has significantly advanced the understanding of how misfolded prion proteins induce conformational changes in normally folded proteins, leading to neurodegenerative diseases. Notably, Dr. Vorberg has explored the role of endogenous retroviruses in enhancing the intercellular dissemination of protein aggregates, suggesting potential targets for therapeutic intervention.  Additionally, her studies have demonstrated that yeast prion domains can propagate as prions within mammalian cells, providing insights into the cross-species transmission of prion-like proteins.  Through these contributions, Dr. Vorberg has provided valuable insights into the pathogenesis of prion diseases and potential avenues for treatment.
